Downtown Edmonton Gets Its Groove Back: Behind the Scenes of the Action Plan

Edmonton urban planning committee recommends Downtown Action Plan
Ever tried getting developers, business owners, arts groups, and community leaders in one room to agree on anything? Well, that's exactly what we got to do as part of the City's Downtown Action Plan process. And honestly, it was pretty exciting stuff.
As the engagement facilitators, we had a front-row seat in getting diverse groups to come together and tackle some of Downtown Edmonton’s biggest challenges. From property developers sharing their vision for new housing to arts organizations dreaming up ways to bring more life and connection to our streets, the energy in these sessions was more inspiring than tense.
What Makes This Time Different
At least everyone could agree that the old throw money at it and hope for the best approach wasn’t going to cut it this time. Instead, these conversations zeroed in on smart investments that would pay off for our city. We're talking real returns: more residents downtown, bustling businesses, higher property values, defined districts, and streets that actually feel alive after 5 pm.
Each group brought their A-game with ideas for making downtown a place where people want to be–to live, work, and play.
One thing we heard loud and clear: "Stop with the 10-year plans already!" Edmontonians are ready for faster implementation. The City clearly listened, and this time they set their targets on getting stuff done in 1-5 years. Now that's what we call moving at the speed of business.
Beyond the conversations, we wanted to ensure the plan itself would be as engaging as the process that created it. Berlin was proud to captain the plan's graphic design, creating a visual narrative that makes the complex information accessible and engaging. Through thoughtful typography, color palette, infographics, and layout, we helped transform a strategic document into a compelling story of Edmonton's downtown revitalization.
The Results
While we can't take credit for writing the final $553 million Action Plan (that's all City of Edmonton), we're proud of the relationships and dialogue fostered through this process, which will support successful implementation in the future. The plan reflects what happens when you get everyone in the same room, focused on making smart investments in our downtown's future, together.
Edmonton's downtown belongs to all of us, and its revitalization requires coordinated action driven by strategic investments with clear returns. We're proud to have helped create space for the meaningful conversations that contributed to shaping this important roadmap for downtown's future.
Looking ahead, we're excited to see these ideas turn into reality. Because let's face it, a vibrant downtown isn't just nice to have, it's essential for our city's success beyond the boundaries of downtown.
Now that's something worth getting excited about, wouldn’t you agree?
